Do I need small slices or large slices?
Whether you need small slices or large slices depends on what the function of the cake is. Will it be served as dessert or simply served with coffee at the end of the celebrations? Are there other desserts or sweets? Does your family REALLY like cake?
If you are serving the cake as dessert, (or if your family loves cake!!), you will be needing large slices. Because dessert is served to each guest, you will need the enough servings to serve all the guests expected to attend.
NOTE: some venues charge a 'cakeage' fee. This is the cost to cut, prepare and serve the cake. It is charged per head. Make sure you check what these charges are and incorporate them into your budget so you don't get a nasty surprise.
If you have other desserts or sweets, or you want to serve the cake with coffee, or you just want the cake for the sake of having cake, you can have small slices. Small slices are not served out to each guest the same way dessert is, so you can get away with having less cake than the number of expected guests. As a general rule, when serving small (or 'coffee' slices) you only need to cater for up to about 75% of your guests. This means if you are expecting 100 guests, you will only need a cake that serves 75.
TIP: Having said that, I know my family and friends would all want a slice of cake, so I would allow probably 120 slices for 100 guests!!! No-one has ever complained to me about having too much cake, so if you are worried, go for more rather than less.
What's the difference between large and small slices?
Large slices are 2.5cm x 5cm x approx. 8-10cm high
Small slices are 2.5cm x 2.5cm x approx. 8-10cm high
This may be hard to visualise if you are having a round cake. I allow for my cakes to be cut the same way whether they are square or round. This makes it easier for the person cutting the cake, and I understand that many people are not hosting weddings and other events at reception venues, which means whoever ends up with cake cutting duty may not have had much experience!
To cut the cake (round or square) first make slices 2.5cm apart vertically along the cake. Your cake should now be cut in long, thin slices. Turn the cake around (so the slices are horizontal) and cut 5cm (2.5cm for small slices) pieces. Only cut one of the long, thin slices into pieces at a time for round cakes. Its as easy as that!
NOTE: Some sizes of square cake need a slice taken off one way first, then the rest cut into pieces, but if that applies to your cake, I will let you know and provide instructions.
Can I have my cake delivered?
Yes. You can pick your cake up, or have it delivered. There is a delivery charge, so let me know where you are and I will let you know how much it will be.
Where is Cakes n Stuff? Is it a shop?
Cakes n Stuff is located in Lalor Park, Sydney (Australia). I am not a shop, but a small home based business.
What payment methods do you accept?
I am happy to accept direct deposit, bank cheque or money order. I will only accept cash on a face to face basis, as it is unsafe to send it through the post. Please contact me for more information.
I would like to sample the cakes, is this possible?
You are more than welcome to make an appointment to sample some cakes. There is a fee of $30 for samples, but this includes up to 5 very small cakes (larger than cupcakes) in different flavours for you to take home. This means you can have a friend or family member give you an opinion too.
Can I meet with you to discuss my needs without purchasing samples?
Of course. You do not need to purchase samples to meet with me. I am happy to meet face to face to discuss your needs. Face to face meetings allow for you and I to get the same idea of what colours, themes, patterns etc... you are thinking about for your special day. Please feel free to bring as many samples/ designs/ pictures as you like.
How far in advance do I need to order my cake?
Generally the rule of thumb is as early as possible to avoid disappointment. I am often booked for busy dates up to 6 months in advance. Yet sometimes I am able to make a cake with as little as 1-2 weeks notice. Usually 4-8 weeks is a good timeframe, but as I say, the earlier the better. I limit the number of bookings I take per week, and I do not take bookings more than 1 year in advance.
When does the cake need to be paid for?
A deposit of 1/4 of the value of the cake (or $50, whichever is greater) is payable to secure the date. This is paid when you know for sure you would like me to make your cake. This payment ensures you definitely have booked me to make your cake for that date.
Balance of the cake is payable either as smaller payments along the way, or as a lump sum due 2 weeks before the date you require your cake. The cake must be fully paid for by the time I give you the cake - no payment, no cake.
